Belem Tower
Belém Tower (Torre de Belém)
Belém Tower is one of the most iconic monuments in Lisbon, Portugal. Built in the early 16th century, it stands proudly on the northern bank of the Tagus River and is a symbol of Portugal’s Age of Discoveries. Originally conceived as a defensive fortress to protect the entrance to the city’s harbor, the tower also served as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon.
Designed in the Manueline style, the tower features intricate stonework, maritime motifs, and Moorish architectural influences. Its detailed balconies, watchtowers, and the statue of Our Lady of Safe Homecoming reflect the artistic grandeur of the era.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Belém Tower attracts visitors from around the world who come to admire its historic beauty and panoramic views over the Tagus. It stands not only as a military relic but also as a tribute to Portugal’s maritime heritage and global exploration.
