Benagil Cave
Benagil Cave – The Algarve’s Iconic Sea Cathedral
Just off the coast of Benagil Beach lies the Benagil Sea Cave, one of Portugal’s most iconic natural wonders. Shaped by thousands of years of ocean erosion, this majestic cave features a circular opening in its ceiling — known as the “eye” — allowing sunlight to pour in and illuminate its sandy floor.
Accessible only by water, the cave can be visited by kayak, paddleboard, or boat tour departing from Benagil, Carvoeiro, Portimão and other nearby towns. Swimming is possible for experienced swimmers, but not recommended due to waves and boat traffic.
Inside, the cave is spacious, peaceful, and perfect for photography or quiet admiration of nature’s artistry.
Highlights:
- Famous dome-shaped sea cave with skylight
- Only accessible by water (no walking access)
- Popular for kayaking, SUP, and boat tours
- A must-see natural wonder of the Algarve
- Best visited early in the day to avoid crowds
