The Village Grocery Store of Alte
Nestled in the hills of the Algarve, the village of Alte is known for its whitewashed houses, cobbled streets, and natural springs—but it’s also home to traditional grocery stores that embody the charm of rural Portuguese life. 

These mercearias de aldeia are often modest in size but rich in personality. Inside, the shelves are lined with local essentials: fresh bread from nearby bakeries, cheeses from the hills of the Algarve, cured sausages, and jars of homemade jam. Alte’s stores often feature local almonds (amêndoas), dried figs (figos secos), and seasonal fruits grown in the surrounding countryside. Many also sell medronho, the strong fruit spirit distilled in small batches by local families. 

In Alte, shopping is more than a task—it's a social ritual. Locals chat with the shopkeeper, exchange recipes, or catch up on village news.
